A village of about 150 people, Besse is a timeless beauty. Located in the Écrins National Park, it is the starting point for many hiking and mountain biking excursions and can be reached from the road between Col de Sarenna and Mizoen, a 3-kilometer road with an average gradient of 9%.

Please note that the road leading to the pass after Besse is not paved. You have to drive 20 minutes on a track to reach it. Better to be warned!

A beautiful old village with an interesting museum. The entire village itself is like an open-air museum. Next to the museum is a small shop with restaurants.

A beautiful green plain with a meandering river through the lowest point. The GR54 trail is relatively busy, while the other paths are quieter. There's a parking lot with a public restroom at the top.

Caution: very long and steep climb from Chazelet. Be careful with water management; there is little water along the way, with only a small river before the lake.

Authorized bivouac area

It is on the Plateau d'Emparis, a superb place. A long time ago, I had come across beautiful goats and majestic horned billy goats there. Dream bivouac with a view of the Meije, its 3 peaks and its gap, the Girose glacier and the Râteau.

I heard that it was sometimes dried up but for my part in July 2024 it was still sublime (Cf the photo that I added). However, it would be a shame to stop there and not go up to the black lake and the lérié lake which add a bit of walking but which offer a sublime view of part of the massif and the meije
