The multi-use trail along Elmore Road starts off looking very urbanized, marked by a curved pedestrian bridge over the first major road intersection. But the farther north you follow this paved trail the more interesting it gets, passing through greenbelts and even sporting a few sculptural and artistic touches. Bikes are welcome here, but please watch out for slower trail users!

If you're coming down this hill from the Kincaid chalet, it's an easy cruise as long as you don't get distracted by the pretty views and crash into a moose or a tree. But if you're going uphill, the more than half-mile of steady climbing is a real quad-burner. Wildlife sightings are very common here; please make sure to give them lots of space.

This pretty lake feels surprisingly remote, given that it's smack in the middle of Alaska's largest city. Happily, the trail is paved so you don't have to stop to take in the views — unless you want to.

As you run past Taku Lake, keep an eye out for kayakers, assorted waterfowl, and maybe even river otters in the lake. The multiuse trail here is paved and has only mild inclines, but you might want to keep an eye out for flying fishhooks from people fishing from the shore. (Most of the time they are pretty good about watching out for trail users before they cast their hook into the water, but not always.)

This hill stretches for more than a half-mile of continuous elevation gain or loss, depending on which direction you're headed. If you've started your run from the Kincaid Chalet and are heading roughly northwest, it's a nice downhill warm-up. If you're heading southeast to finish your run at the chalet this hill can feel like a personal attack, coming as it does at the very end of your run. But burning lungs and quads are good for the soul, right?
