According to local opinion, the foundation and construction of the chapel can be traced back to 2 events. A storm catastrophe in 1670 and a robbery attack around 1680, in which the count's family remained unharmed. After the left Rhineland was occupied by French revolutionary troops in 1794 and the Counts of Gerolstein fled to Bohemia, the chapel fell into disrepair. In its current form, it was re-founded around 1900 by a Gerolstein merchant family. A son of the family was arrested after an unsuccessful storm by bourgeois insurgents on May 18, 1848 on the witness house of the Prussian garrison in the nearby district town of Prüm. The bush chapel in the Gerolsteiner Stadtwald is made of red Kylltal sandstone and is consecrated as a pilgrimage chapel of Maria zum Klarbronnen. Visitors have the opportunity to ring the bell of the church tower. Inside the building there is a life-size golden figure of Mary, which is holding the dying Jesus in her arms. It is framed by flower arrangements and a candlestick.
