Cyclists, hikers, and bikers will encounter such a monument in almost every village. For many generations, it was mostly referred to as a "war memorial." In recent years, the term "Gefallenen-Ehrenmal" (fallen memorial) has become more common in German-speaking countries, deemphasizing the heroic nature of the war (this was particularly emphasized during the so-called "interwar period," when many of these monuments were erected). In recent decades, however, attention has increasingly been drawn to the misery and suffering of the soldiers who died in the war, whose names are enshrined here. For they ultimately paid for their service to their fatherland with their lives.
