Hiking the most beautiful trails up in the Montafon mountains
There are peaks that don't impose themselves. They don't call, they wait. The Kreuzjoch is such a place. Not a dazzling show peak with a rugged spectacle, but a silent guardian above the Montafon – a ridge where walking becomes listening, and listening becomes a return to oneself. The path winds through the terrain like a thought – not loudly, not heroically, but almost casually. And yet it changes you. With every step, the space grows, the view opens up: green hollows, broken ridges, steep flanks, rock inscriptions of the earth's history. The mountains all around – Zimba, Madrisella, Sulzfluh – bear their names like myths, but up here they need no words. They tell their story in silhouettes. The summit cross itself – twisted, forged, tense within itself – seems not like a monument, but like a symbol: for the taming of the wild, for the journey through time and depth. It is not a place of triumph, but of contemplation. The wind up here isn't just a sound, it's language. It tells of glaciers that once existed, of water veins in the rock, of animals that cross the slopes at night. And of people who come – and then go again.

The path is a poem of stone, carved into the skin of the mountains. You don't step onto it – you step inside. Into a world where the above dissolves, the below disappears, and only what matters in between: between sky and slope, between footsteps and silence. The Latschätzkopf, not a loud peak. No cross, no exclamation mark. Instead, a silent witness at the edge of the sky, watching over the tilted waves of the Rätikon. Drusenfluh, Sulzfluh, Zimba – names as if carved from granite, called by the wind. Up here, everything is visible. The folds of the earth, folded over centuries. The course of past glaciers, marked like old scars. And the present – in the form of a marble of a human, wandering, groping, searching. Every step on this ridge is a decision. For the open. For the ambiguous. The path isn't straight – it questions. The wind beats in your ears, the sun pierces the heights, and sometimes your gaze falls so low that your knees begin to tremble. And yet: a calm. Not a standstill, but a kind of movement that doesn't have to move. Your gaze glides, your heart breathes with the landscape. And perhaps that's the meaning of such places: to leave a piece of yourself here in order to take something greater with you.

We were there when there was snow, luckily not too much to lose the way. I think it's beautiful up there

Also as a descent from Sulzfluh, but only for experienced hikers (passing difficult in places). There is a large Stoneman at the entrance (actual exit).

The Three Towers play the main role in Montafon and are often referred to as landmarks. They stretch elegantly into the sky like the Dolomites. The Three Towers are located on the border between Austria and Switzerland and are part of the Rätikon. The Three Towers include the small Drusenturm (2,754 m), the middle Drusenturm (2,782 m) and the large Drusenturm (2,830 m).
