The Church of the Virgin Mary was built on the old foundations in the 18th century in the Baroque style. It is the sanctuary of the diocese of Ugento-Santa Maria di Leuca. On the promontory where the current church of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae stands there was originally a pagan temple dedicated to Minerva, as evidenced by the discovery of an altar preserved inside the church. In the square in front of the church there is the Pietrina Cross, the Marian column dating from 1694, surmounted by a statue of the Madonna by Filiberto Aierbo de Aragon, and the lighthouse.

It is truly exciting to reach Km 0, the southernmost point of the Italian peninsula, where the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea meet. The Santa Maria di Leuca lighthouse is the second tallest lighthouse in Italy, after that of Genoa.

Castrignano del Capo is the southernmost municipality of Puglia. The Borgo Terra district in the historic center is very particular, an ancient fortified settlement built in the 15th century to defend itself from Turkish incursions. One of the municipal hamlets is Santa Maria di Leuca, a famous tourist resort with the basilica sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae and Punta Ristola, the southernmost point of the Salento peninsula.

The panorama from here is truly breathtaking, on one side it opens up to the Ionian towards Calabria on the other you look at the bay of Santa Maria di Leuca, the imposing lighthouse and the Adriatic Sea. It is said that this is where the two seas meet. The rocks of this promontory hide two secrets: an imposing natural cave, called Grotta del Diavolo, and an underground bunker or casemate with a very special charm.

Be careful when going down. the purple clay is very slippery in places!
