Beautiful square of Melpignano

In the center of Melpignano, Piazza San Giorgio is named after the patron saint of the city. The mother church of the same name overlooks it and has a portico that is quite rare in Puglia. It is one of the places where the famous popular music event called "Notte della Taranta" takes place.

According to neighboring residents, the crypt has been closed for a couple of years now for organizational reasons. It shouldn't have any structural problems because it was renovated in the past. There's no information about opening hours and/or days. Try contacting the Castrignano de'Greci city police to find out if and how you can visit.

Sternatia is located in Grecia Salentina, a region south of Lecce where grico, an endangered dialect of Greek origin, is spoken. The city has an ancient history rich in artistic and cultural testimonies and a walk through the alleys is a good moment to take a moment to rest from pedaling.

It's a small town of just over seven thousand inhabitants. It belongs, together with the municipalities of Martignano, Sternatia, Zollino, Martano, Castrignano de 'Greci, Corigliano d'Otranto, Soleto and Melpignano, to the so-called area of "Grecìa Salentina", a sub-area of the province of Lecce where remains alive in some traditions the Greek-Byzantine culture spread in Puglia between the sixth and twelfth centuries and in particular the dialect, now considered as a real language, the 'griko'. The name of the town infact comes from 'Kalimera', meaning "good morning" in Greek. After all, the Byzantine influence continued to exist in the religious rite until 1663 and this also allowed the language to be preserved. Moving slightly away from the original route and follow to the right (with the church at your back) along via Montinari, the most important axis of the town, you can reach the small church of S. Antonio and the sider "hospitale" which once welcomed pilgrims and passing people. The road has beautiful courtyards, such as that of S. Calimero and S. Paolo. Some others smaller courtyards are an example of a poor peasant dwelling, equipped with a room in front (the 'sappuèrtu') which served as a tool's shed and animals'shelter.

It's the village of the Grecìa Salentina area with the highest percentage of people speaking griko. The meaning of the word infact comes from 'Sterna' (cistern, well) and 'Thia' (sacred) which indicates that probably in the past there were wells or sacred cisterns where religious ceremonies were held. Since 1100 was under the Norman , the Swabian and had a certain importance also during the Angevins that in 1334 fortified it with solid walls. From the castle of Sternatia, seat of the Aragonese troops commanded by Giulio Antonio Acquaviva, of which expedition freed Otranto from the siege of the Turks in 1480.
