Just a few meters after starting the 4th stage of the Ahrsteig, I had my first contact with the Ahr River. It was in the form of a memorial commemorating the terrible flood disaster 🌊 of 2021. Right behind it is the slow and peacefully flowing Ahr River. I saw aquatic plants swaying gently in the gentle current and lively trout. It's hard to imagine that this seemingly peaceful river devastated the valley back then, destroyed livelihoods, and claimed so many lives... 😰

This striking vantage point, which hikers/walkers reach on the Geopfad (Geopath) above Schuld an der Ahr, also has a name ending in "Lay" (sometimes spelled "Ley," as here). This choice of name suggests slate as the underlying rock. Since we are located here – geologically speaking – in the "Rhenish Slate Mountains," the number of corresponding "Ley" sites is not surprising.

You could almost walk right past him. But when you see him, pause for a moment and remember the victims of that night, which shocked all of Germany.

At the "Goldloch" of a former mine, there are information boards about the mine and the Ahr flood in July 2021. The events and consequences are impressively presented here.

The old Hunters' Trail is a beautiful mountain and forest trail. Hidden away, it reveals impressive rock formations to hikers and winds along the slope parallel to the L 73. Surefootedness and sturdy footwear are recommended. Two benches with a view invite you to rest along the trail.

Impressive views of Schuld and the Eifel mountains. Anyone who climbs here and continues along the Ahrsteig trail toward Schuld should be sure-footed.
