The castle was probably built at the end of the 11th century. Around 1150, the von Olbrück family—the presumed builders—died out, passing the castle to the Counts of Wied. Made of basalt, as the dark color of the small stone sacred monument reveals, there is a very old wayside cross here. The inscription is, as the proverbial "ravages of time" dictate, only partially legible; Anne has reproduced it in her article as far as it can be recognized. The niche is striking in its design; perhaps it once housed a saint's figure in earlier times (but that is speculation).
