The Grauerort Fortress was decommissioned from its original function as an artillery fort as early as 1895. During the First World War, it was used as a temporary depot for sea mines, a use that became permanent from 1922 onwards. In 1926, the Grauerort Fortress received its own landing pier, from which the sea mines were loaded until 1945. A narrow-gauge railway, now known as the Groveblitz, transported the mines from the fort to the ships. From 1948 until the 1960s, a restaurant called Klein Helgoland (Little Helgoland) stood on the landing pier, serving as a stop for Hamburg excursion boats.
