The Freiburg harbor channel is an approximately 2 km long, unclassified federal waterway in the district of Stade in Lower Saxony. It serves as an access route from the Lower Elbe to the Freiburg harbor and is under the jurisdiction of the Elbe-North Sea Waterways and Shipping Authority. It is classified as an inland waterway subject to the Maritime Shipping Regulations.

Drive or walk along Abenflether Hafenstraße and you will reach the Abbenfleth barrage at the end of the street. A great cycling route and hiking trails run along here.

The Krautsand lighthouse today consists of a distinctive red and white steel lattice upper light (1907) and a modern, fiberglass lower light (1978), which together form a leading line to guide ships safely through the Elbe River. This line is characterized by a synchronized flashing pattern of 8 seconds, designed to facilitate navigation. A fantastic cycling and hiking trail runs along here, surrounded by beautiful nature 💚. There's a charming little harbor with old half-timbered houses. Restaurants are located near the harbor.

There is a campervan site on the fortress grounds, which is very popular. Sanitary facilities were specially provided for this purpose. Every first Sunday of the month during the summer, a flea market takes place opposite the fortress grounds. Furthermore, cultural and musical performances are also held. Highly recommended! 👍🏼

Grauerort Fortress is a Prussian high-walled fort situated on a small promontory directly on the Elbe River's shipping channel. It was built between 1869 and 1879 north of the fortress town of Stade to protect the Port of Hamburg, approximately 50 km away, from enemy ships from the North Sea. To this end, the fort was equipped with two 68-meter-long flanks along the Elbe, providing space for a total of 10 modern cannons. Decommissioned in 1895, the fort survived both World Wars relatively unscathed. Today, Grauerort Fortress offers visitors a wealth of attractions.
