On a cool March day, this spot was beautifully sunny. But the cold wind quickly drove me away.

At the starting point there is a hiking car park and a small hut with a standing table in the middle.

It's nice and soft and springy to walk on here - but one or two roots can become a tripping hazard, so keep your eyes open👀

If you want to see the lake well, you should do the tour when the trees are not in leaf 😊

The Riveristalsperre mainly serves the city of Trier and the communities of Gutweiler, Korlingen and Sommerau for drinking water supply. It is located near Riveris and Osburg on the edge of the Osburger Hochwald and the Ruwer Valley in the district of Trier-Saarburg. A beautiful circular trail with a length of about 7.5 kilometers leads around the dam. The Riveristalsperre dam is 178 meters wide and consists primarily of valley and hillside gravel. There are forelocks at the two roots of the dam, the structures of which are 9 m high earthen dams.

Technical data: Dam: 350,000 m³ slope and valley gravel, dam height: 50 m, dam width: 178 m, content: up to 5 million m³ drinking water. The area around the dam is a water protection area. You can walk around the dam on a leisurely hiking trail. There is a large car park below the dam. Swimming and water sports are not permitted on the dam, as the water must be protected from contamination.

The drinking water dam, which was built in the Riveris valley, has been supplying the city of Trier with water from the Hochwald since 1958. The 50 m high dam is impressive, the maximum volume of the reservoir is 5 million m³. The guided tours offered free of charge by Stadtwerke Trier are very interesting. The difference in height between the dam and the city of Trier is so great that the water flows with its own gradient. While the Roman aqueduct ran along the flanks of the valley, the Riveris water takes the shortest route and therefore has to be channeled through tunnels twice. The first starts right at the dam and ends after 1700 m on the right-hand slope of the Ruwer valley above Sommerau. The entrance to the second tunnel is on the left side of the Ruwertal near Gutweiler. After 1200 m, the water is routed in an underground pipe to the filter system near Irsch, from where the cleaned water is fed into the municipal water network. Technical data of the dam: Dam: 350,000 m³ slope and valley gravel Dam height: 50 m, dam width: 178 m Content: 5 million m³ drinking water The circular route is closed to traffic and invites you to contemplative walks. There is a large hiking car park below the dam. There is an overgrown protection zone between the paths and the reservoir to protect the water from contamination. Swimming and water sports are not allowed.
