The “Langer Christian” lighthouse in Kampen on Sylt is an important maritime landmark on the island. It was put into operation in 1856 and has since served as an important landmark for seafaring along the North Sea coast. The lighthouse stands south of Kampen and is easily visible due to its black and white color scheme, which offers a strong contrast to the red cliff and the often gray sky. Originally known as the “Red Cliff,” the lighthouse was powered by a kerosene lantern, which was a technological sensation at the time and was even presented at the World Exhibition in Paris. Over the years, the lighthouse has undergone several modernizations, including conversion to electric operation in 1929 and extensive renovations between 2004 and 2006. Since 1977, the lighthouse has been automated and is remotely controlled by the Waterways and Shipping Administration. The “Lange Christian” is no longer accessible today, but it remains a popular destination, especially for walkers and cyclists who want to enjoy the picturesque surroundings and the impressive views. The lighthouse reaches a fire height of 62 meters above sea level and has a range of 20 nautical miles in white light.

Who do we have to thank for this new German name? Nudenn. The coast is a few hundred meters to the east. If the visibility is good, you can see the only moraine on the coast from Skagen to the German Bay. It lies between Ballum (at Havneby on Röm) and Emmerleff (at Braderup/Munkmarsch). This stretch of coast without dikes is worth a trip, especially in the morning, when Sylt is bathed in the morning sun. Very easy to reach via Klanxbüll, access about 16 km. While you're there, a trip around the Rickelsbüller Koog might be a good idea, about a 4 km detour. There, too, you can see Sylt if you drive in front of the dike.

The wandering dune is the absolute highlight in List on Sylt. From the road that leads to the town, you get an exclusive insight into the beautiful nature and the largest continuous shifting dune area in Europe. The shifting dunes reach an impressive height of 30 meters.

The best way to explore the area around the lighthouse is on foot

The Kampen lighthouse, as it is officially called, is once again a beautiful building that is typical of northern Germany. Unfortunately, a visit (status: 06.08.2022) was not possible.
