The almost 6 km² Hallig Hooge is one of the 7 inhabited Hallig islands (out of a total of 10) in the German North Sea. Every spring and autumn, the salt marshes provide feeding and resting grounds for thousands of migratory birds. Hooge is the most inhabited and most visited Hallig in the North Sea. Its name means "high" Hallig and since it is also surrounded by a small summer dike, there is only "land under water" here two or three times a year.
