Ellerau station is a station on the AKN line A1 on the Hamburg-Altona-Neumünster line, which was opened for passenger traffic in 1884.

The Karl Rautenberg Museum is a local history museum located in the annex of the Ellerau town hall, established in 1990. It displays living spaces from around 1900, farm implements, folk household and work tools, and tools from a shoemaker's, tailor's, blacksmith's, and carpenter's workshop, as well as from the bricklayer's and butcher's trades. It is open to the public on Saturday afternoons with free admission. It is named after the Quickborn druggist Karl Rautenberg, who offered his extensive collection to the former mayor of Ellerau after the municipality of Quickborn expressed no interest. The Ellerau Local History and Museum Association was founded in February 1988, and the museum opened two years later.

The Bürgerpark (civic park) in the center of Ellerau is laid out along the Krumbeck stream, which is dammed here to form several ponds. The Ellerau outdoor swimming pool and the community's fairgrounds are also embedded in the park.

The Ellerau Evangelical Lutheran Church is a member of the North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church and belongs to the Hamburg Diocese. The congregation currently has approximately 2,300 members. Daily at 6:00 p.m., the "peace ringing" of its bells invites everyone to remember and pray for the people of Ukraine.

The new Commander-in-Chief of the German Navy, Admiral General Hans-Georg von Friedeburg, and his delegation met with British officers from the staff of British Field Marshal Bernhard Montgomery here on May 4, 1945. The Germans were taken to the Timeloberg in Wendisch Evern near Lüneburg, where they had already been for preliminary negotiations the day before. Here, around 6 p.m., they signed the document declaring the unconditional surrender of all German troops on the western and northern flanks of the territory conquered by the British, namely northwest Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands.

The Rotarians started the reforestation of the Quickborner RotaryWaldes Langeloh in 2020. Since then, around 16,500 new trees have been planted on more than 3 hectares. The campaign was ceremonially ended in March 2022 with the unveiling of a memorial stone.
