The church was built between 1681 and 1685, according to the plans of the Italian architect Antonio Petrini, on the foundations of a previous church and a pagan sacrificial site. The interior of the church was decorated in 1692, with particular attention being given to the ceiling painting, which is a listed building. In autumn 2019, hard-working helpers from the Bernterode Citizens' Foundation restored the covered pedestrian bridge over the Wipper at the old fire station.
