The Heligoland shaggy cows are Galloway cattle. A breed of animals that are very resilient and are therefore kept outside all year round.
In addition to the heather sheep, which can also be found here all year round, the cattle serve to keep the grass from the cliff as short as possible. This keeps the blooming and thus the pollen count low; because the air on Heligoland should remain as pollen-free as possible.

Galloways, also known as shaggy animals on Heligoland, are the island's landscapers, along with the Heidschnucke.
They show no shyness towards humans and are therefore very curious.
