Glauchau Castle, the predecessor of the later palace complex, was built around 1180 by the Lords of Schönburg on a promontory above the valley of the Zwickauer Mulde. The Lords of Schönburg are one of the oldest Saxon noble families and have owned direct imperial possessions since the 12th century, meaning they were subject to the emperor alone, exercised their own sovereignty and thus belonged to the high nobility. The castle formed the centre of their new dominion of Glauchau.

Hinterglauchau Castle is a Renaissance castle in Glauchau in western Saxony. It was built from 1470 on the site of a castle built around 1170 by the Lords of Schönburg and was the center of their rule for centuries. With the construction of the parts of the building later called Schloss Forderglauchau, the complex was expanded in the direction of the city from around 1525. At the same time, the core lock was rebuilt. A museum was set up in the castle in the early 20th century.
