The main purpose of the Fort de Bellegarde was to control and protect the strategic passage through the Pyrenees between France and Spain. For centuries, this region was disputed between the two powers and strengthening the border was essential for the security of the French kingdom.
The fortress was designed by the military engineer Vauban, who was known for his innovative fortification techniques. The Fort de Bellegarde was built with an imposing structure and strategically located on the top of a hill, allowing it to have complete visual control over the surrounding terrain and access routes.
