Hiking

The Potzberg, as part of the Palatinate Saddle, is primarily formed by the Heusweiler strata of the Upper Carboniferous. They consist of sandstones, arkoses, mudstones, and interbedded conglomerates. In these sedimentary rocks, cinnabar ores (HgS), which represent a compound of mercury with sulfur, were deposited along the fault lines. The toxic heavy metal mercury (Hg), one of the seven metals of antiquity, was used in the 18th century primarily for barometers, mirror production, amalgamation (gold and silver extraction), and in medicine.
