Mostly tarred and the change between ascent and "less ascent" sometimes allows breathing. Good for testing and training your mountain fitness. The picture with the height profile from Herchenrode shows the situation. You arrive at ~ 450m above sea level, pretty much the highest point on Hutzelstrasse. Schmal-Beerbach is at km 30, the highest point at km 32. Strongest gradient approx. 11%
And up on the Hutzelstrasse, as a reward, it goes largely downhill, both left to Kuralpe and right towards Ober-Ramstadt
