Often overshadowed by Ben Lui, its illustrious neighbour, hikes to Ben Oss are not to be outdone. These are magnificent adventures to a towering Munro summit that arguably boasts even more sensational views than those from Lui. Plus, there’s no reason not to ascend both in one epic outing for a day that will embed itself in your memory for many years.

A remote yet stunning viewpoint in the Southern Highlands

One of the four Tyndrum Munros, Ben Oss is flanked on either side by the larger Ben Lui and Beinn Dubhchraig, a neighbouring Munro on the other end of a horseshoe ridge system cradling wild Loch Oss. Walking routes to Ben Oss are long and committing, often taking in these other summits en route. It is challenging walking, but paths are fairly distinct and there are no technical difficulties.

Once you have gained its lofty summit, it is time to regain your breath and take in those views, which are extensive and mountainous in every direction. The headline act is undoubtedly Ben Lui, casually gazing across its dominion to the east, its ridges meeting at a gracefully tabled summit. Tear your eyes away to the south, however, and you’ll discover an astonishing view of distant Loch Lomond, with Ben Lomond standing proud above its shores.

Ben Oss is fairly remote and quite a trek from any direction. The best base is perhaps Tyndrum, which has excellent eateries and a superb outdoor gear shop. In winter conditions the Tyndrum Munros are the preserve of experienced mountaineers equipped with crampons and ice axes.

Tips

  • Alex Foxfield

Ben Oss is a broad, 3,376-foot (1,029 m) Munro that very much plays second fiddle to neighbouring Ben Lui. However, the view from the summit is awe-inspiring, both back towards Ben Lui and south along Loch Lomond. It is usually ascended along with Beinn Dubhchraig to the east.

  • Fine views over to Ben Lui. A fairly straight forward ascent to here from Beinn Dubhcraig.
