Next to the Sendlinger Church, on the other side of Lindwurmstraße, there is a memorial to the smith von Kochel, a legendary and very popular figure in Upper Bavaria.
At Christmas 1705, a peasant uprising that culminated in a "March on Munich" was brutally suppressed by imperial troops just outside the city in the "Sendlinger Mordweihnacht". The last one to fall was the blacksmith von Kochel, a giant, an original Bavarian creature from a man. To this day there are festivals and parades in his honor. However, it probably never existed. Hans Ferdinand Maßmann probably invented it or at least made it known as a mythical figure. The Munich professor of German studies published his story in 1831 about the "heroic death of the Bavarian national defenders near Sendlingen" and thus shaped the perception of what was happening - to this day.
