The name Bornhöved means "head of the spring". This is expressed in the coat of arms by the water-spouting bowl and the head floating above it.
The name "head of the spring" comes from the fact that the Eider, Stör and Schwentine rivers spring from the ridge of Bornhöved. The Holstein nettle leaf not only indicates that the place belongs to Holstein, but also refers to several events that are important for the history of Holstein:
After the battle on the "Schwentinefeld" in 798, in which Charlemagne defeated the Saxons in alliance with the Abodrites, the area was settled by Slavs.
On July 22, 1227, Count Adolf IV and other North German princes and cities defeated the Danish King Waldemar II here. This meant the end of Danish rule over large areas of the Baltic region.
In the Middle Ages, the Holstein nobility held their meetings on the "Viert" near Bornhöved. During this time, the place may have had town rights for several decades. Finally, in 1813, a battle took place here between Danish-Schleswig-Holstein and Swedish-Russian-Prussian troops.

Nice break area with seating, a table and a beautiful view.

In the late Middle Ages, Bornhöved was a central meeting place on the fourth of the North Elbe Saxons, the nobility, the church princes, the knighthood and the towns of Holstein until 1480. They held their meetings and their state parliaments here.

There is a nice resting place with stone benches and a table as well as a campfire place.
