Shopping street in Helsingborg
Kullagatan is the main shopping street in downtown Helsingborg. It runs in the city center between the main square Stortorget and the Sankt Jörgens Plats.
The road itself has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages. The name Kullagatan she carries, because at its northern end, today's Sankt Jörgens Plats, formerly the Kullaporten, the city gate was in the direction of the neighboring peninsula Kullen.

Already in 1961, the southern half of the street, which was one of the main commercial streets in Helsingborg for a long time, was converted into a pedestrian zone. Thus, the Kullagatan was also the first street in Sweden in an existing development that became a pedestrian area.

The resident merchants were initially very skeptical of this innovation, but was quickly convinced by the success of the concept. A little later, the northern half of the street became a pedestrian zone, so that today's shopping street has a length of about 500 meters. Since then, a large part of Helsingborg's retail business has concentrated on smaller and larger stores in this inner city area.
