The St. Matthew's Church in Resterhafe (Schwittersum) is the older of the two "Glory Churches". It was probably built in the middle of the 13th century on a five-meter-high warp. The foundation was made of heavy granite stones. The one-room church in the monastery format is made of bricks. The aisle flanked by two rows of simple wooden benches leads to the choir room, which - a rarity in East Frisia - still has a wood-worked barrier, the so-called Lettner, which separates it from the nave.
The separate bell tower is a bit younger than the church. It has been home to two bells for centuries.
In 1972, during an excavation in the interior, at a depth of only 1.5 meters, they encountered the floor of an even older, probably wooden, church.
