After the First World War, the two shelters of the Merano section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club, the Lodnerhütte and the Hirzerhütte, were expropriated by the Italian state and given to the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) for guidance. After the Second World War and the establishment of the Merano section of the Alpine Club South Tyrol (AVS), the desire arose to build a new hut to replace it. The Meraner Hütte, built with donations during the 1960s, was inaugurated in 1970. It was named after Hermann Gritsch in honor of the late AVS section chairman.

Very nice hut in a great location. Although, one can no longer speak of a hut here: It's a really big inn with "normal" guest rooms. I can only recommend the half board! Very good and rich food.
