The Hoge Kempen National Park is the first and so far the only one in Belgium. It was opened in 2006 and, among other things, the pine forests and the heathland are protected here.

Right behind the entrance to the national park you have a beautiful view of the heathland.

There is no visitor's reception at the Mechelse Heide entrance gate. There is only a shelter with instructions, rules and a map of the hiking area on which the hiking routes are indicated that depart from this gate or are located in the Mechelse heide hiking area. Other facilities at this gateway include a picnic area and a cafeteria open from February to November. There is also a camping site near the cafeteria.
