Barnabò Visconti was locked up there until his death by his nephew Gian Galeazzo, who had ousted him.
The castle underwent a serious period of decline in the nineteenth century, when it was even transformed into a quarry for already squared building materials.
It is currently used as a backdrop for open-air cultural and artistic events.
