From 1869 to 1872, the Johanniskirche was built as a successor to the dilapidated predecessor church on the highest square in the city. It is a neo-Gothic church - and to this day the interior of the church has largely been preserved as it was when it was built. The roof of the church has recently been refurbished - the next big project is the organ. It is an instrument made by the well-known organ builder Runge from Hagenow.
