Mierlo is known for its cherries: The Mierlose Zwarte, they are very popular and only available for a short period. When? That is different every season, the harvest is very unpredictable!

Mierlo is a place in the municipality of Geldrop-Mierlo, in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant. As of 2019, the place has 10,776 inhabitants [1].

      Quick Facts
Until 1 January 2004, Mierlo was an independent municipality. The municipality of Mierlo transferred Mierlo-Hout in 1968 and in 1995 Brandevoort to Helmond. In 2004, Mierlo merged with Geldrop into Geldrop-Mierlo. The Mierlo core, with around 10,000 inhabitants, is the smallest core of the merged municipality.

      The population is largely Catholic.

Under mayor J.J.F. Krol (1908-1994) established a new town hall in 1963. The Myerle Heemkundekring is now located in the old town hall. The building is also used for weddings.

      Location
Mierlo is located between Geldrop and Helmond, on the edge of the urban area of Eindhoven and Helmond.

Nearby church villages are Nuenen, Mierlo-Hout, Lierop and Heeze.

      Etymology
The name Mierlo dates from the early Middle Ages. "Lo" means "forest" and "ant" would be related to "swamp" (compare the English "mire" and Swedish "myr"). "Forest on high sandy soils" and "forest by a lake" are a number of explanations.

Another explanation for 'ant' is that Mierlo is named after the former Mere stream that flowed through Mierlo in the Middle Ages. This also explains the name of the Mierlose hamlet of Medevoort (formerly Merevoort).
