In the year 721 Bonifatius came to Amöneburg and founded a monastery there, which was followed eleven years later by a church dedicated to St. Michael. Nothing is known about the history of this church. The monastery was probably dissolved after 1200, as the Archbishop of Mainz bequeathed the income from the former monastery to the Mainz church in 1217. Nevertheless, Amöneburg retained its supra-regional ecclesiastical importance.

Erected from 1865-71 according to plans by Georg Gottlob Ungewitter. Ecclesiastical center of the Catholic area around Amöneburg, parish and deanery church. At the same place Bonifatius founded his first mission monastery in 721, which was expanded in 732 and expanded with a Michael church. End of the 13th century New building of a three-aisled, Gothic hall church, which was elevated to the status of a collegiate church in 1360, heavily damaged in the 30 Years War, rebuilt from 1660 and redesigned in Baroque style from 1711-13. Demolished in 1862 except for the massive tower, then rebuilt.
