In the year 721 Bonifatius came to Amöneburg and founded a monastery there, which was followed eleven years later by a church dedicated to St. Michael. Nothing is known about the history of this church. The monastery was probably dissolved after 1200, as the Archbishop of Mainz bequeathed the income from the former monastery to the Mainz church in 1217. Nevertheless, Amöneburg retained its supra-regional ecclesiastical importance.
