In the middle of a busy intersection you will find the monument to THE identification figure of Heidjers ... I fear that Mr Löns would have wished otherwise.

On August 29, 1866, Hermann Löns was born in Kulm, West Prussia, now Chelmno. Today, he is considered the German heath poet par excellence, thanks in part to poems and songs such as "The Heath is Burning":

        "On the Lüneburg Heath
        in the beautiful land
I rose and I went under
I found all sorts of things along the way."

In Hermann Löns's works, the birches grow green, the roses bloom, and the fox and hare not only say goodnight to each other in harmony, but are also lovingly enchanted with names like Kunrad Flinkfoot and Lischen Hopsinskrut.

A nature lover, this poet, without question. And an environmentalist, long before the eco-movement existed. His texts, written at the beginning of the 20th century, still sound modern, almost visionary.

In contrast to his stories, his death was anything but romantic. On September 26, 1914, the writer and journalist Hermann Löns fell in one of the horrific battles of the First World War near Reims, France.
