The name Friedenskirche was given to the church in 1998 on the occasion of the commemoration of the Peace of Westphalia 300 years ago, because Wolfgang Conrad von Thumbshirn, squire of Ponitz, had a large share in the peace negotiations.
The present church was built 1733-1734.
A predecessor building from Romanesque times was probably built in the 10th century in place of a Slavic settlement.
The organ by Gottfried Silbermann was installed between 1735 and 1737. It was an exception that the king had such an organ built outside Saxony. He was friends with the then ruling noble family in Ponitz. It was donated by Carl August von der Planitz, Dorothea von Schönberg, b. von Zehmen and Christiana Sibylla von der Planitz, b. von Zehmen, who signed the corresponding contract on September 14, 1734.
