I have seen such an old gun shelter at Brest near the fortress of Bertheaume. But I can not say when they were built. In any case, the gun could be pushed over the rails out of the hangar into position.

To my knowledge, this is an old hangar for the lifeguard's boat before the motorization. The rails made it possible to put the boat in the sea. This position also allowed the rescuers to be closer to the place of intervention, the old port being at the first pier further from the Cape.

A lifeboat used to be housed here. The harbors are dry at low tide and a boat stationed in the harbor could then not put out to sea. So they put a boat further out in a shelter. The boat stood on a wagon and could roll into the sea on rails when the alarm was raised. The car is still in the hut, unfortunately the boat is no longer.
A better preserved such rescue station can be found at La Hague.
