Heddesheim is known as a tobacco community. The oldest evidence of tobacco cultivation dates back to the 18th century. After World War I until 1939, Heddesheim was the largest tobacco community in Germany, with its peak year being 1935, when approximately 900 tons of tobacco were produced by approximately 250 farmers. Tobacco is still grown here today, but production is now only 1-2 tons. Numerous tobacco barns, where tobacco leaves were and are hung to dry, can still be seen in Heddesheim. These barns dominate the townscape.
