The Uelzen I and II locks near Esterholz were built when the Elbe Lateral Canal was being built from 1968 to 1976. After all, a height difference of 23 meters has to be overcome here.

The locks Uelzen I and II belong to the so-called economy locks. In addition to the actual lock chamber, this lock shape has a few more arranged basins that can take up some of the water when the lock is emptied.

When the Elbe side canal was built in 1968-1976, a so-called saving lock was built near the village of Esterholz in order to overcome a difference in height of 23 meters. This was supplemented by a second lock. After eight years of construction, the new lock Uelzen II was released on 8 December 2006. The federal government invested 122 million euros in the new lock. The centerpiece is the new lock chamber with a usable length of 190 meters and a width of 12.50 meters. It was built as a so-called saving lock with a total of eight saving basins, which are arranged on both sides of the lock chamber in four levels one above the other.
