large and worth seeing complex with Romanesque and Gothic predecessor buildings. Visiting the exhibition is relatively expensive.

Rather plain and inconspicuous on the outside, the abbey church is worth a visit. Above all, a guided tour is worthwhile, as the unbelievably interesting history of the abbey, whose social and cultural impact had a Europe-wide influence. So it is not surprising that the upper class of that time sent their sons to "education", one was then among his own kind again...
As I said, the history of the abbey is exciting - apart from the religious importance - also from an economic and (transport) political point of view! In the early days and for almost centuries it was the only passable point to connect the north (France and Germany) with the south (especially Italy / Rome) through Switzerland. The Jura formed a natural barrier, except for this loophole...and so the explanations go on and would never end, a great chapter of history, albeit for different and sometimes contradictory reasons, the interior - let's say cautiously - sparse / fails sober.
On the other hand, the visit is still worthwhile, even if you are not close to the "church", the few steps up the tower alone are worthwhile, as the view far into the transverse valleys makes it easier to understand / more visible. Not to forget the hospital, monastery, insane asylum or whatever it was in the respective epoch (until modern times) indirectly belongs to the compulsory consumption of the visit. And if you still have the nerve, you can take a guided tour (the same person usually at least in German and/or French) in the round cheese production facility located across the street with the original technique of "cutting" the cheese by cutting it is rubbed all over using a wooden plate and a rotating blade... brilliant and - depending on the degree of ripeness of the cheese - very tasty to spicy.
