It is no longer known since when mills were operated in Klein Rönnau. For example, Already in 1342 the Rönnauer mill was mentioned in a document. From 1523 to 1639 there is talk of a mill of the Knights of Rönnau (von Rönnouwe). In 1624 in the Segeberg town council it was recorded that the miller from Klein Rönnau with the name Johann Bernß had borrowed 100 marks from the tailor Klaus Struwe, who lived in Segeberg, and received them back in October of the same year. So there was at least one mill in Klein Rönnau before the Thirty Years' War. The current building of the Rönnauer watermill was built in 1649.

In addition to the watermill, there was a windmill in Klein Rönnau. This was built in 1796 as a so-called "gallery Dutch". The windmill was demolished around 1935 due to dilapidation.

The water and wind mills complemented each other, they gave millers the opportunity to grind grain even in dry summers when the mill brook ran no water.

The listed mill ensemble has been owned by the municipality again since 1.1.2008. In the miller's house, 4 modern apartments have been created, in the former machine house there are 2 apartments as well as the community's cultural area and kitchen. This room can accommodate around 60 people and is available for community meetings, church services, weddings and cultural events. The original mill building, which still contains parts of the original grinder from 1649, has been completed since 2002 by a group of interested citizens and repaired where necessary. In 2004 an electric motor (built in 1920) was installed in the mill.

The pond was dry until a few years ago. It is now filled again. You can also get married in the mill!
