The Reichenbach flood retention basin was built between 2016 and 2019 on the boundary of the two Hechingen districts of Boll and Stetten. It is intended to improve flood protection in the area of the Reichenbach and further downstream of the Starzel, which in turn is a tributary of the Neckar. The Zellerbach flows into the Reichenbach in the storage area above the dam. The basin is usually dry and is only filled during floods and its outflow is controlled. It is designed for a storage capacity of 235,700 m³; The storage area then reaches 7.6 hectares. The client is the Starzeltal flood protection association and the operator is the city of Hechingen.
The dam is straight and has a height of 12.5 m above the riverbed and is accessible. The dam is built continuously for fish. After the Starzel flood in 2008, the Starzeltal flood protection association was founded. The construction costs amounted to 4.83 million euros, of which the state of Baden-Württemberg covered 3.2 million.
