The stave church was built on a former thing site, which is still called Gildevollen (guild hill) today. In pre-Christian times, the place was of central importance in Gudbrandsdal. The oldest part of the church was built around 1220 as a stave church on the area of an even older church.
The stave church is one of the largest of the 28 remaining Norwegian stave churches and services are still held here today. A visit is absolutely worthwhile.

Hiking

one of the numerous stave churches in Gudbrandsdalen. The church received the red ridge turret during a renovation in 1630. Numerous coins were found during excavations in the church in 1980/1981. The oldest dates from 1020 and was minted in England under Canute the Great.
