The Bocholt-Herentals Canal was the first part of the Kempische Vaart (1846). In the 1930s the western part merged with the Albert Canal or was muted. The eastern part was preserved, expanded and deepened (1926-8) and given its current name. However, it then lost its role as the only waterway between the industry around Liège and the port of Antwerp. Much of the traffic has now been taken over by the shorter and modern Albert Canal.
