The Grohnde nuclear power plant (KWG) is located north of the Lower Saxony district of Grohnde on the Weser in the municipality Emmerthal in the district of Hameln-Pyrmont. The central component of the power plant is a pressurized water reactor of the 1300 MW construction line, which was built by Kraftwerk Union. The power plant is operated by the Gemeinschaftskernkraftwerk Grohnde GmbH & Co. oHG. Shareholders are PreussenElektra (83.3%) and Stadtwerke Bielefeld (16.7%). The operational leadership lies with PreussenElektra. [1]

The rated output of the power plant is 3900 megawatts (thermal). The net electrical output is about 1360 megawatts. 193 UO2 fuel elements with an enrichment of up to 4% 235U and MOX fuel elements are used. An increase of initial enrichment to 4.4% was requested. The reactor belongs to the third generation in Germany, the so-called pre-convoy systems and was first on 1 September 1984 critical. After 37 years of operation, the decommissioning is planned for the end of the year 2021.
