Embark on a challenging hike to Ben Avon from Linn of Dee, a difficult route known for its diverse terrain and unique granite tors. You will begin by traversing through ancient Scots Pine forests before the path opens up to heather-clad slopes and a vast, rocky plateau. The most striking features are the unusual volcanic granite tors, especially the summit tor, Leabaidh an Daimh Bhuidhe, which offers dramatic photographic opportunities and requires an easy scramble to reach. This extensive journey covers 23.1 miles (37.2 km) with a significant elevation gain of 3098 feet (944 metres), typically requiring 11 hours and 33 minutes to complete.
Planning your visit requires careful consideration due to the trail's remote nature and strenuous demands. The initial estate tracks are excellent, and some hikers choose to cycle part of the way to conserve energy before the mountain ascent. Be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions in the Cairngorms, as wind, rain, and even snow are possible, adding to the difficulty. Good navigational skills are essential, especially on the high plateau where paths can be faint or non-existent in mist. River crossings, such as the Allt an Dubh-ghlinne, may become impassable during spate conditions, so check forecasts before you go.
Ben Avon is the easternmost of the high Cairngorms, distinguished by its sprawling massif and the array of granite tors that dot its expansive plateau. The remoteness of the area ensures a truly wild mountain experience, often placing you miles from the nearest road. The picturesque Linn of Dee, where the River Dee carves through a narrow chasm, serves as a beautiful starting point for this adventure. For experienced walkers, there is also the option to combine Ben Avon with neighboring Munros like Beinn a' Bhùird, creating an even more epic circuit.
