The term Gur (fermenting) was previously used to describe a "wet mass emanating from the rock". Diatomaceous earth was formed by the deposition of microscopic fossil remains of diatoms that lived in waters several hundred thousand years ago during the interglacial periods.

Usages for the Gur were recognized only a few years later. The merchant Berkefeld, founder of the filter factory in Celle, acquired part of the deposits and opened in 1869 his first factory in Niederohe. By 1930 there were six works in the Unterlüß area. Kieselguhr has now found a versatile use, for example in the production of drinking water filters, for the safe storage of nitroglycerin, for clarification in the beer and wine preparation and for cleaning agents, powders and pastes.

Very scenic area where you can go hiking and mountain biking. The paths are not so suitable for normal bikes, as there is always a lot of sand.

        A very relaxing spot.
