The term Gur (fermenting) was previously used to describe a "wet mass emanating from the rock". Diatomaceous earth was formed by the deposition of microscopic fossil remains of diatoms that lived in waters several hundred thousand years ago during the interglacial periods.

The merchant Berkefeld, founder of the filter factory in Celle, acquired part of the deposits and opened in 1869 his first factory in Niederohe. By 1930 there were six works in the Unterlüß area.
