If you come along the Danube Cycle Path, the Steinertor is one of the first impressions of Krems. Nice to look at. The gate leads to the city center.

A very beautiful sight, a sight in Krems. You simply have to drive through here, or rather, you're allowed to, because the passage itself is a little highlight. Afterward, you practically have the city of Krems in front of you!

The Steiner Gate is the most famous landmark of Krems an der Donau and the last remaining of what were once four medieval city gates. The massive tower dates from the late 15th century and bears the inscription "AEIOU" and the year 1480, which indicates its reconstruction after attacks by Hungarian troops. In 1756, the gate received its baroque spire with its magnificent coat of arms under Maria Theresa. As part of a modern art project, metal cubes on the base also commemorate the persecution of the Jewish population after 1938, while a memorial plaque commemorates the devastating flood of 1573.

To mark the city's 700th anniversary, the Steiner Gate was extensively restored in 2005. It marks the entrance to Krems' historic pedestrian zone and is a central starting point for city tours and walks through the old town – an impressive symbol of the connection between history and the present.
