Steinach Gorge

One of the most impressive natural monuments in the district of Kulmbach is the wild and romantic Steinachklamm. A locking bar made of hard, silica-rich quartz once prevented the water of the Steinach from flowing further. According to legend, Thor solved the problem. He roared through the air on his team of goats and met the desperate Steinach in front of the great rock face, who asked him to pave the way for her. Then Thor hurled his hammer against the rock, the stones broke and opened the way. In gratitude for this, the brook drove the nearby gun hammer, built by Thor, with its large paddle blades, which moved the huge blacksmith's hammers in the hut. So the legend goes.
