At the beginning of the 1870s, the idea was born to build a prestigious building with gardens at the foot of the Várhegy (castle hill). Built between 1875 and 1883 according to the plans of Miklós Ybl in neo-renaissance style, the complex forms the end of the city garden to the Danube. Originally in the arcades stores were housed, later it was furnished in studios. From 1884 worked Alajos Stróbl, a Hungarian sculptor and creator of the Matthiasbrunnen here.
