Vlissingen got city rights in 1315. Fort Rammekens, east of the city, was built in 1547 to protect ships of the United East India Company. The prosperity of the city was based on herring trade and salt production, but also privateer and slave trade of shipowners. 1573 succeeded in a Dutch fleet in the Dutch War of Independence in the Battle of Vlissingen to prevent cannon bombardment of the city by the Spanish Armada. In the 19th century Vlissingen was a major naval port (Wikipedia).
