The Potzlow Church was originally not a village church, but a market settlement church from the first German settlement phase around 1239. Like various other sacred buildings, the Potzlow Church was probably built under the guidance of the Cistercian monks. It was designed not only as a place of worship, but also as a defense system that served as protection for people in times of war and was even actively defended. Among the built-in bricks in the "monastery format" there are also those with the step seal of goat (buck?) And dog. They are interpreted as a protective symbol that should serve to ward off demons and forces of evil. One of these stones was discovered while repairing the church. It was walled up next to the west entrance.
